| VARIOUS HANDOUTS & ACTIVITIES I have a lot of success integrating British folklore (fairies, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, mermaids, selkies, grims, etc.) with the classics. Recent hit movies like Pirates of the Caribbean , Van Helsing, and Beowulf have also helped to revive students' interest in pirates, Frankenstein, Dracula, and Beowulf. |

| Brit Lit is one of my favorite classes to teach. I mean, who can resist heroes like Beowulf, King Arthur and Robin Hood, not to mention folklore rich with fairies and ghosts? Throw in famous characters like Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde, and Sherlock Holmes and introduce the adventures of Lemeul Gulliver and Jim Hawkins and you've got yourself a class most teens can really sink their teeth into. |

| Check out my article "New Rules for Old Lit: Connecting At-Risk Kids to the Classics, 'Commando Style'" published in the August 2007 issue of English Leadership Quarterly for more details about the techniques I used in my Brit Lit class, which made a student named Shane ask me for copies of all the stories we read during the first semester because, "You always have the best stories." |

| COAT-OF-ARMS PROJECT
One of my students' all-time favorite projects is when they create their own Medieval Coat of Arms at the end of our unit on Arthurian legends. A great resource for this project is Rosemary Chorzempa's Design Your Own Coat of Arms: An Introduction to Heraldry . |
