I  teach World Literature mostly as a Comparative Mythology and Folklore class.  Using myths, legends, and folklore from around the world allows students to see how ALL people are connected by story.

Every culture has creation myths, heroes, and legends that reflect the values and beliefs of its people.  Every culture also has folktales and many cultures have folktales that overlap.  Students are interested in this.  Ask students:

Why do you think stories have variants?
How are the variants similar?  Different?
What needs do these stories fulfill?

It won't take students long to recognize similarities between the stories.
